About NGT

NGT Tasmania is one of Australia’s first Group Employment and Training Organisations (GTO).

Registered as a Not for Profit company (NGT Ltd.) in 1987, its inaugural chairman was the late Lance H. Barnard (1 May 1919 - 6 August 1997) who was Tasmanian born and raised in Launceston where NGT was founded.

A former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and part of Gough Whitlams Labor Government Lance Barnard is credited as a founding father of the Group Employment system that today represents c. 42,000 of Australia’s apprentices and trainees placed with 35,000 host businesses. As a tribute to this visionary man, each year at the Group Training Australia conference a Lance Barnard Memorial Speech is made by a significant political figure or Vocational Training expert.

The company has undergone significant growth over more than two decades in Tasmania with new products and services and for a period was one of the most prolific employment and training companies in Australia in the vocational sector.

The business units of NGT Tasmania and CHOICE Employment were acquired in 2006 by another Tasmanian success story Business Enterprise Centre Mersey Inc. who continues the valuable legacy started by the founders of NGT.
