BMST is part of O group, a partnership that brings together the power of many minds to deliver simple business, employment and training solutions to all Tasmanians.

Andrew Windle (State Manager, BMST) and a team of 3 Mentors attended the 2011 Tasmanian Community Achievement Awards dinner held at the Launceston Grand Chancellor Hotel on October 28th 2011. In the final run to the line BMST was pipped at the post by Bruny Island Cheese.  Nevertheless, it certainly was a very proud moment for all those involved in mentoring and suitable acknowledgement for all the thousands of businesses that BMST mentors have helped over many years of service to the Tasmanian community.

Daniel secures his dream job

Daniel Hardman was employed through NGT in May 2010 as a Civil Construction trainee for the Devonport City Council. Over 12 months Daniel worked towards gaining his Certificate II in Civil Construction. For Daniel this was a great opportunity as he enjoyed “getting out and about all the time, and being able to do something different”.

Near the end of Daniels traineeship an opportunity arose at the council for an automotive apprenticeship, hosted by NGT. Automotive was a field Daniel had always wanted to work in so NGT and the Devonport City Council worked together to assist Daniel in securing his new role.

Daniel completed his Civil Construction traineeship on the 30th May 2011 and started his new automotive apprenticeship the next day.

“Civil construction was a good lead up to automotive” said Daniel “There was always someone to talk to at NGT. They were a great help through my traineeship”.

NGT is now working with Daniel and the Devonport City Council as Daniel undertakes his Certificate III in Automotive, due for completion 29th May 2015.

ANZ has a strong working relationship with NGT Tasmania (Group Employment) and is currently engaged in an Indigenous Trainee program with NGT Tasmania.  ANZ currently has seven trainees on board ranging from school-based traineeships to full-time.

According to Joanne Weller, ANZ district manager, Southern Tasmania, the quality of candidates selected by NGT Tasmania for her to interview has been excellent. “It’s been hard to make decisions at times due to the quality of people put before me”, Ms Weller said.

Over the past year, Ms Weller has worked closely with NGT Tasmania’s senior client relationship consultant Tamara Bingley in order to achieve their mutual goals.  “Tamara has been very efficient, timely and professional during our interactions and I really trust her judgement. She has taken the time to fulfil roles within my business and delivers every time.”

“I have not hesitation in recommending their (NGT’s) services”, Ms Weller confidently concludes.

Cruising Into a Dream Job

Jessica Tavner

Jessica Tavner faced many hurdles while looking for a job as she did not have the necessary experience or qualifications required by employers. She was about to give up when she saw an NGT Tasmania advertisement in the newspaper for an administrative person with no prior experience. Shortly after applying, Jessica received a call from NGT Tasmania and a few weeks later, she was employed as The Julie Burgess Administrative Trainee at Devonport City Council.

Jessica worked on the restoration of the “Julie Burgess”, an old fishing ketch which was built from Blue Gum in 1936 by Ned Jack of Launceston. Devonport City Council purchased the 74 year old vessel with plans to have it restored to the original condition. Once fully restored, the Julie Burgess will undertake short cruises along the coast, among the Bass Strait Islands, and even as far as Victoria. Plans have also been made to build an extension on the heritage listed Maritime Museum building, which will house the Julie Burgess interpretation centre. For more information on this project, please visit www.julieburgess.com.au.

Since beginning her career at Devonport City Council, Jessica has successfully completed her Certificate II in Business Administration and has gained a wide range of skills and experiences. She credits NGT Tasmania and Devonport City Council for assisting her with completing her qualification and for making it a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. Jessica highly recommends this traineeship to those who are seeking experience and employment.

Jessica’s traineeship with NGT Tasmania was made possible with the support from the Australian Government through its Get Communities Working and Local Job Streams programs.

Citing a few bumps along the way during her traineeship, Hayley says it’s the constant support from NGT Tasmania consultant Julie Kiss that helped her get through. ‘I was continuously encouraged to strive higher and bounce back from any struggles that arose” Hayley said.

Hayley started as a trainee in reception at the NWRH in 2008, doing a Certificate 2 in Business. “Working on reception was a fantastic way to find my feet and become familiar with surrounding departments and the staff that work within them.”

In 2009, Hayley was employed by NGT Tasmania to continue completing her Certificate 3 in Business in the NWRH’s Nursing Administration.

According to Hayley, the way the training modules were delivered and the learning style was also helpful in a work situation. “The skills I obtained in completing my certificate were beneficial to my every day work.” Hayley cites the Time Management course run by NGT Tasmania Training as being especially valuable.

“Having been in this role for almost 2 years I have found it to be an extremely rewarding experience. The skills I have learnt both professionally and personally have been of great benefit.”

Long term, Hayley hopes to continue her employment within the Department of Health and Human Services and maintain her personal development with further education.

Long-term jobless get a break at Banjo's.

Posted on Tuesday, 21 September 2010 | Permalink

FOUR long-term unemployed people - including one who was unemployed for 784 weeks - have found full-time employment with Banjo’s bakeries after completing a pre-employment training program.

The program, funded under the Federal Government’s Australian apprenticeships access program and offered by NGT Training, an O Group company, in partnership with Banjo’s and WorkPlus, ran over six weeks incorporating 190 hours of training and 10 work placement shifts.

Graduates of the NGT program have all the skills required to be considered for employment at Banjo’s and a partial qualification in certificate III in food processing (retail baking-combined).

Thirty-one-year-old Alan Hodgetts, unemployed for 784 weeks, successfully completed the course and is now working in the Shoreline Banjo’s franchise.

“The people I work with are great and I just love the work.” Alan said.

Shoreline Banjo’s franchisee Adam Peppiatt, who has employed three of the program’s graduates, said he could not be happier with his new employee.

According to NGT’s state manager Training Greg Faull, the company advertised the course via employment service providers and Centrelink and received 65 applicants.

Training covered introduction to retail, food safety, kitchen hand and baking operations and introduction to OH&S. They also received first aid and customer service training.

Banjo’s chief executive officer Jon Lister said he was pleased that Banjo’s was in a position to offer four permanent positions. “The joint approach to training and providing real work experience in partnership with NGT Training has obviously benefited the participants,” he said.

“And Banjo’s will also benefit as we now have a new group of potential employees who not only meet our requirements but can start work in any one of our bakeries today.

“It is an excellent outcome.”
